Objetivo: NYC

Still with jet lag but full of energy for the rest of the year and so much good ideas in my mind, NYC is always what i need. 

This time, i went with my new zine on my backpack. I did breath in and out and went for a walk with it. I always feel so shy about my work but the newyorkers are open and welcome with the "underground artists" (i mean, poor, insecure and expectant).

Todavía estoy con jet lag pero traigo energía recargada para el resto del año y muchas - muchas ganas de hacer cosas nuevas. Nueva York siempre me pone las pilas. Esta vez llevé mi nuevo fanzine en la maleta, respiré hondo y de paseo que me fui con él. Esto siempre me da una vergüenza horrible pero los neoyorquinos están tan acostumbrados a los artistas undergrounds (es decir, pobres, inseguros e ilusionados) que todo lo hacen sino fácil, sí al menos super amable.

I made the final touches in the zine and poster to add my site (still under construction). I did this in a cafe, in Williamsburg. This is what i more miss when i´m in Madrid because there are not any of those big and confortable places where to work. People doesn´t pay attention about you, everybody is working and quite!! You can ask for a coffee, spend an hour and the waiter doesn´t hate you because of it. But i must confess, it´s getting common to hide the plugs! I still remember when it was pretty normal to spend a whole day inside a cafe, with your computer plug in and filling your body with coffee and bagels till your eyes came off. 

Los últimos retoques en el fanzine y póster fueron para añadir mi nueva y próxima web. Lo hice en uno de los muchos e increíbles cafés que abarrotan las calles de Williamsburg. Esto es lo que más añoro cuando estoy en Madrid. No hay cafés cómodos donde trabajar sin que nadie te mire (ni bien ni mal) cuando trabajas en lo que sea, porque todos alrededor hacen lo mismo ¡¡y en silencio!! Puedes pedir un café y tirarte una hora con él sin ser odiado aunque, contaré la verdad entera ¡comienzan a prohibir los enchufes! Hace no mucho podías enchufar tu portatil y acampar a base de cafés y bagels hasta que tus piernas flaquearan y tus ojos se salieran de las órbitas. Ahora sólo hasta que la batería del portátil se acabe, los tiempos están cambiando...

Just next to the cafe, i made this big discovery, Art Library. A digital library where to archive sketchbooks projects. The place is beautiful, the idea is so interesting and you are welcome to visit. I loved it, so i had to leave my poster as a little present. More info at www.brooklynartlibrary.com.

Justo al lado de este establecimiento hice un descubrimiento muy grande, Art Library. Una librería digital dónde archivan proyectos de artistas, todo muy underground pero el lugar es precioso, la idea muy interesante y puedes entrar libremente a cotillear. Desert Island is my favorite bookstore around the world. It´s very charismatic and Gabe is always so nice, open to see and listen any project and talk to (i´m afraid) so many fans. So, i´m back in there with posters and i bring back some ideas and suggestions that i hope soon draw up.

Desert Island es mi librería favorita en el mundo. Es el proyecto más carismático que conozco y Gabe es siempre encantador, más que dispuesto a ver cualquier proyecto y charlar con, me temo, los muchos fans que tiene este enigmático lugar. Renuevo mi punto de venta, esta vez, con pósters. Además me llevo un par de sugerencias e ideas que pondré en práctica brevemente.

 

Next stop, Bluestockings. Another  great bookstore that each time has less ilustration but more politics and feminism. It´s funny that they are getting more space and prominence to the magazines and zines area. This is another charming place in the Lower East Side. The best, to have a look to the people around, some of them reading, drinking te, working with their computers or knitting... Thanks to Betsy again, for keeping me a little place on your bookcase.

Siguiente parada, Bluestockings. Otra gran librería que cada vez tiene menos ilustración pero más política y feminismo. Curiosamente han ampliado la sección de fanzines y revistas. Otro lugar encantador dentro del Lower East Side. Lo mejor siempre es la mezcla friki del personal, unos ojeando libros, otros tomando té, trabajando con sus portátiles, haciendo punto… Gracias también a Betsy por reservarme un huequito en sus estanterías. 

Photocopy chaos

Cambio de planes, paso de formato postal a librito. La improvisación se debe al poco amor y disposición que ponen en las fotocopiadoras a las que he ido. Ninguna admite papel de mayor gramaje. Increíble pero cierto. 

Montar con todos los dibujos un mini fanzine ha sido un poco complejo pero ha terminado por gustarme. En La Riva he encontrado un buen papel, ¡asi que me subo arriba de nuevo!

I changed my mind! From card´s size to mini fanzine. This is because of so less love and help from the photocopies places i went to. No one admits double-weight paper. Unbelievable but real!

Assemble a fanzine with all the drawings hasn´t been easier but i think i like it. I did find a nice paper in La Riva, so i´m up again!

Lo que más odio de montar un fanzine es el careto que se me queda cada vez que me doy cuenta de que la colocación de las páginas no va en orden numérico sino salteadas. La teoria me la sé, pero la olvido. Por lo que me tiro una horita rascándome la cabeza mientras sólo alcanzo a decir "pero qué c...?" durante un buen rato. 

I hate when i am assembling a fanzine and my face goes like silly when i realized that the pages are not going in a regular numerical order. I know the theory but i always forget it, so i spend an hour trying to figure it out meanwhile i just say "what the f..?" for a while.

¡Algo es algo! (Something is something!)

Algo está pasando. Desde hace unas semanas y hasta el 30 de abril, dedicaré todo mi tiempo a "algo", mi próximo mini fanzine autoeditado. De momento aquí van los comienzos pero nada es definitivo, lo único que tengo claro es que nada es seguro.

Lo primero, el argumento. Tras volverme loca con varias ideas a la vez, me he decidido por mi guía particular de consejos para llegar a crear algo. Cómo soy de las que se distraen con el vuelo de una mosca, siempre dedico tiempo a enumerar sugerencias para poder concentrarme más en mi propia fórmula de trabajo, y así consigo distraerme nuevamente en algo distinto a la maldita mosca. ¡Por fin sacaré partido a ésas anotaciones!

Something is going on. Since a few weeks and till the end of april, i will spend my whole time working on "something", my next selfmade fanzine. Here i go with the first steps but nothing is for sure. The only thing i´m positive it´s that nothing is definitive.

First, the script. After i became mad with many ideas, i decided to create my own list of arguments to focus of how to do something. I am this kind of person who dedicates timeeee looking at the flight of a fly. I always spend so many hours to think about ways to create a work enviroment to create something especific. This is how i lose my time thinking in a different thing that is not the fly´s flight. At last i will use all this ideas i got once!!

25 consejos para artistas sobre cómo conseguir organizar nuestro tiempo y energía en la creación de algo concreto. ¡Se acabaron los paseos a la nevera, las ansias de ordenar los armarios justo cuando toca dibujar o mirar la hoja en blanco sin que ocurra nada mientras nuestra cabeza reposa en la mano derecha durante horas!

25 advices for artists who wants to focus their time and energy creating something. This is the end of all those visits to the fridge, the need of clean your apartment just when you have to draw or look the white sheet for hours since nothing happens but to hold your head with the right hand!

 

Disposición de las viñetas abocetadas. En un principio las pensé para un formato concreto pero ya he cambiado de opinión varias veces. En los próximos capítulos veremos qué va ocurriendo.

This is the way i first thought to put all the cartoons togheter but i changed my mind a few times already. We´ll see what´s going in next episodes.
